Effective blogging – An 11 stage guide

The aim of this guide is to assist you in the creation of blogs that your target audience will find and enjoy reading. By following the ideas illustrated here your audience will increase and the viewers will be encouraged to share your articles. The key is not to skip any stage stated below or you might leave out content that could be crucial to the success of your blog.


Stage 1: Fill the blogging worksheet
Download the blogging worksheet from here, and make sure that you are following it to the point. This worksheet should be the base of your blog. The topic of a blog should be relevant specifically targeting your audience so they may find it useful and interesting.


Stage 2: Compose the blog article
Carefully pick a topic from the five topics you have brain stormed and compose the article. Ideally your blogs should be 300 to 600 words long. Pay attention to the content you are including in the blog. Disregard the use of keywords, links, images and calls to attention or marketing gimmicks of any kind at this stage. Here, your job is to solely focus on the content your audience will be reading.


Step 3: Include the image
After writing the content, it’s time to include an image. Your image should be relevant, and striking enough to engage the targeted audience so that it will entice them to read the article. The image’s filename should be a match to the keyword you used in Step 1. Also make sure that the image’s alt text includes the keyword.


Step 4: Compose keyword rich anchor text links
It is recommended to have one to two links in your article that link to other pages on your site. There should also be one or two external links to other sites. Make sure while you are creating hyperlinks that the content you are linking is relevant to your page’s content.


Step 5: Adding a call to action
Adding a call to action at the end of each blog you write is a great idea. Preferably, this call to action should be related to the blogs content but other cases it is not necessarily required to be related. Ongoing offers on your site can be promoted at the end of each blog and gradually your blogs traffic will increase, turning it into a prime business venture.


Step 6: Introduce key takeaways in blog
Including five to six key takeaways at the end of your blog will make it more efficient. The purpose of these takeaways is to assist your readers in understanding the content of your blog and action they should take.


Step 7: Include whitespace
In composing a blog adding whitespace is good. Compact looking and short paragraphs are more inviting to online readers who are searching for interesting material and skim through the content rather than reading it word to word. So avoid over-crowded and long paragraphs as they will put off readers.


Step 8: Make important text bold
Highlighting important and relevant text engages the readers by answering their ‘What’s in it for me?’ question. Incidentally, search engines tend to take extra notice of bold words. So ‘bolding’ target long-tail keywords will help you rank higher.


Step 9: Engage with a strong meta description
Your meta description is your 150 character call to action. It makes the readers aware of what they will be finding in your blog and engages them to visit your blog.


Step 10: Tag your blog
A well tagged blog makes it easier for the reader to navigate the blog. 3 tags are usually enough.


Step 11: The golden rules of frequency
Ideally publish once a week, as search engines will learn when new content appears and return to the site on that basis. Because blog readers are picky never publish more than once a day. People are unlikely to read multiple articles in one day so your traffic will be concentrated on the latest blog only.
